10 Causes for Thankfulness, 2020

Happy Thanksgiving to all in the United States!

I considered dropping off for Thanksgiving, but for what? Instead of a lengthy post to make you think too hard, I’m going to stick to simpler material: a list!

In 2019, I was engaged, and my now-husband and I anticipated the many changes that would come for us in 2020. At this point, we can safely say we had no idea how many changes were in the works!

With a long year closing behind us, practicing gratitude helps me keep my eyes up, out of the mud and muck (it’s still there, of course, but it isn’t the only thing!), and counting the blessings of a wild and wacky year.

I sometimes struggle to keep a lighter heart, so I’ve decided to share some “serious” things and some “silly” things- though on any given day, all ten items could make either list if I overthink them!

Here goes:

  1. My support system. My family has its share of dysfunction, but we put the “fun” in there, too. My husband and I got married this year, so my picture of family has doubled in size and scope. We have unending support from our family and many friends who are just as close. I don’t know where I would be without them. I guess I’d laugh a lot less and lose my mind far more often.
  2. Writing. I’ve consistently posted to this little blog for the last 4 months! The part I really don’t believe is that I’ve written and consistently published work here. The daily practice of pulling out my computer and committing time to crafting words and messages for you has challenged me and brought me life at the same time.
  3. The Church. I think Dietrich Bonhoeffer got it right when he said that “the physical presence of other Christians is a source of incomparable joy and strength to the believer” (Bonhoeffer, Life Together). I’ve felt that strength more after we’ve had to keep physical distance and many have stayed home. I need the examples of people who love both God and people better than I do. The Church is a hot mess (the pandemic and tension of this year have put a big ol’ spotlight on that fact), but it’s God’s mess, and God does good work through and in spite of messes.
  4. Books. I learn so many facts and collect so many stories with them. In recent months, I’ve also begun approaching my reading as an intentional effort to broaden my horizons, whether through content I’m reading or authors I’m following. Books make new things and different walks of life more accessible. I love that about them! (If you wanna see what I’m reading, I’m on Goodreads as Rebekah Streeter.)
  5. Music. The holidays in particular allow for more beautiful arrangements of classic hymns and Christmas songs. I could listen to “The Little Drummer Boy” and “Angels We Have Heard on High” on repeat by many different artists! It’s also a fun way to get to know someone. Do you know your people’s favorite style of music, favorite band, or favorite song?
  6. Yellow headlights on cars. As we drive less in general, perhaps, but more when it’s dark, I bless the people who keep softer lights on their cars instead of the painful white ones.
  7. Colored tree lights. They make home feel extra cozy during the cold months. My husband humored me and went shopping with me for lights for our new tree. I’m thrilled, and he’s good to me 🙂
  8. Puzzles! My family must’ve purchased over twenty puzzles since quarantine started. Puzzles are low energy, allow for some thinking without making demands, and they result in beautiful artwork. I’ve enjoyed making puzzles with friends and family this year!
  9.  Food! In general, of course, but this year I’m feeling it extra! I may not have much appetite at the moment (blame the pregnancy), but the variety of food I can eat, and the way we can cook it to trick my body to consume more of it, plus the enjoyable flavors and memories that come from it, is nothing short of miraculous.
  10. You. I mean it! I’m still learning this writing life and practicing putting it out into the world. If you’ve joined me, whether recently or for years, thank you for your support!

As I’ve reviewed these things for which I’m thankful, they’ve walked me back to a posture of rest and worship. Life is insane, and God is good. I hope you can find the gifts in your life, however small or big.

May your Thanksgiving weekend be one of rest and restoration in the middle of life’s chaos and unpredictability. God bless you as you go about your time.

Thanks for reading,

Rebekah
